Yetiv Zvi Cohen’s practice is shaped by the tensions, frictions, and contradictions of Jerusalem’s urban landscape. Working across sculpture, installation, collage, and photography, he explores the relationships between material, image, and space through mythological and political perspectives. The gap between the religious-conservative home in which he was raised and his identity as a secular, openly gay artist serves as a central force in his work. Cohen approaches local aesthetics as both seductive and threatening, examining modes of survival that move between fear and intimacy.
Yetiv Zvi Cohen's exploration of his religious upbringing versus his openly gay, secular identity sounds incredibly powerful and provides a compelling lens for his art. The concept of a "Bicycle Chain" in an insect display box beautifully encapsulates the tensions he feels, almost as if these different facets of his life are chained together. It makes me wonder how he sees these contrasting elements ultimately coexisting or clashing in his broader body of work.
