At the center of Avia Ben-Avi's work lies light as the foundation of both vision and photography. Operating from a union between her own eye and the camera's eye, she explores light as a mechanism of concealment and coding, a sign of presence, an attempt at communication, or a call for help.

In her video works, she activates her domestic environment and her body beyond everyday functionality, evoking an uncanny sense. Her practice is informed by her background in cognitive and brain sciences, manifesting in a research-based process and themes such as the relationship between interior and exterior, optics, the gaze, and perception.
