The Artwork - Does it Reveal an Inner Truth About Its Creator or Merely a White Lie?
When a piece of art is released from the artist's control to the public domain, it becomes subject to interpretation and criticism, which naturally evokes fear and awe in its creator.
Through a series of sculptural and drawing works presented in the exhibition, Michal Fromer and Noa Spector attempt to examine this issue. In their respective approaches, they seek to impose order on the materials they work with: Fromer uses polystyrene, glue, and paint, while Spector uses canvas, acrylic, charcoal, ink, varnish, and threads. This serves as a metaphor for the effort to tailor their artwork to the tastes of its consumers, as well as the desire to conform, to fit in with the surrounding society, and to please it.
Fromer aims to impose order on small pieces of polystyrene that are glued together to create compositions and readymade works. In contrast, Spector strives to compress acrylic into stitched canvas sheets, thus presenting a tidy façade for the internal storm and unrest.
The exhibition "White Lie" sheds light on the differing perspectives of both the viewer and the artists, while also exposing the underlying tension between the artist, the artwork, and the viewer. This theme is amplified through the peepholes integrated into the exhibition space, allowing visitors to observe the works from various vantage points.
