The Wake exhibition views the act of artistic creation as a parallel to prophecy. Four women artists and one male artist look outward at the enigmatic contemporary state of affairs, attempting to form a clear statement within the chaos. Throughout the works, the figure of the oracle—the artist, the prophet—emerges, sometimes as a force of movement and change, and at other times as an observer and a harbinger.

In Lucy Elkivity’s work, which is entirely focused on introspection and listening to inner voices, the oracle embodies the moment of receiving prophecy and invites visitors to move through the space. The figure appears again in Alejandra Okret’s work, navigating the prow of a ship toward a bright future, forging a path through the turbulent present.

In Lili Fisher’s massive collage, densely packed with primal imagery, a female figure attempts to make sense of the past while climbing a crane—like a ladder whose top reaches the heavens. From a bird’s-eye perspective, perhaps she will gain clarity.

In Doron Adar’s photographic installation, the oracle takes on biblical connotations, seated under a date palm tree. Like a prophet at the city gates, she watches and contemplates the reality of the passing year.

But prophecies cannot always be heard. In Hanan Abu Hussein’s work, the pipes are blocked; the voice echoes back on itself. While art may not provide a definitive answer, the mere existence of multiple perspectives coexisting within a shared space offers a sense of solace.
