In the exhibition "Moon Land", Inbal Cohen Hamo explores the Negev—a region marked by conflict—through the lens of two books published in 1963: "Journey to the Land of the Negev", by Rina Hebron, a book the artist read as a child, and "Land of the Negev", by Peter Merom, which she stumbled upon in the street.
Using a multi-layered digital process alongside sculptural interventions, Cohen Hamo obscures parts of Merom’s photographs, constructing an alternative reality where the childhood memories of the artist and her present-day artistic gestures intertwine, creating a fragmented and chaotic visual landscape.
In "Moon Land", Cohen Hamo not only reflects on Merom’s nostalgic depictions of the Negev’s striking natural phenomena but also treats "Land of the Negev" as a sculptural object in itself. The book is "unfolded" within the space through photographic paper and plywood structures, prompting a dialogue about our perception of landscape and materiality.
The exhibition weaves together a mythical past, a scorched present, and an uncertain future. At the entrance, an image of an imagined moon stands, imprinted with the silhouette of an astronaut from the Apollo 16 mission in 1972—a haunting, self-reflective portrait of the act of documentation itself.
