ABOUT
אודות
The exhibition presents works by 32 contemporary illustrators, each offering their own interpretation of the concept of a “comfort zone.” All pieces are created within a large, fixed square format designed to provide a limiting framework that challenges the illustrators to step outside their own comfort zones. The works are displayed in lightboxes, and many of the artists have used light as a central element in their creations.
The choice to use this medium is multifaceted: first, it introduces a physical dimension—both through the depth of the box and the presence of light—that draws both creators and viewers out of the conventional, comfortable realm of classic two-dimensional illustration. This interaction between form and theme adds another layer of meaning.
Additionally, the use of light brings a symbolic element of self-aware irony. In Hebrew (as in other languages), the word for “illustration” derives from the verb “to illuminate”—to shed light on something (traditionally, a text). This too serves the theme of the exhibition, emphasizing the meta-illustrative questions facing contemporary illustrators and challenging established paradigms and stereotypes in the field (such as the notion of illustration being inherently childish or linked to children’s media).
